Study Abroad

Drawing from Max Baucus’s life and work experience building diplomatic bridges, including as the United States Ambassador to China, the Baucus Institute brings Montana students on immersive study and cultural exchange programs in China and Ireland. The students, many of whom have never traveled internationally, engage in people-to-people diplomacy with students, professors, and leaders native to these countries.

No academic credit will be offered in 2024. Both programs have funding for up to 15 student scholarships. The emphasis for our programs is people-to-people diplomacy.

China has emerged as one of the world's most powerful economic forces in today's global economy. Our future, and the future of our children and grandchildren, will be greatly affected by how well we manage our relationship with China. There is an increasing need for experts familiar with the ever-changing nature of the Chinese economy and Chinese political and legal systems to provide advisory services to businesses and policymakers. The Institute recognizes these needs and offers Montana students the opportunity to experience China's culture, language, policies, and people first-hand. The Institute provides scholarships so that students who would not otherwise be able to travel internationally have the opportunity to participate. Learn more about each 2024 program

Ireland Summer Study Abroad

Ireland and the US have deep historic connections in our governments and cultures. Western Montana and County Cork in particular have a special relationship, as many Irish leaving western Ireland in the late 1800s settled in Butte, Helena, Anaconda, and Missoula. Beginning in 2022, the University of Montana's Alexander Blewett III School of Law has partnered with the University College Cork in Cork, Ireland, to offer a 2-credit comparative law Summer Study Abroad program.
