Moot Court Team Wins Regionals, Advances to Nationals
The Blewett School of Law moot court competition team returned from the Northwest Regional Competition at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon with a win.
The petitioner team of Vicki Dettman ‘17, Eli Inabnit ‘17, and Anne Sherwood ‘17 took first place out of the fourteen teams participating and were undefeated through the preliminary, quarterfinal, semifinal, and final rounds. The UM respondent team of Mindi Driscoll ‘17, Megan Melvin ‘17, and Constance Van Kley ‘17 also performed exceptionally well, finishing in third place and having the fourth-best brief out of the fourteen teams. They also were undefeated through the quarterfinals before losing a close round in the semifinals to a University of Utah team, which the other UM team then defeated in the final round.
This is the second consecutive year that UM teams have finished first in the region and also wrote the top brief. Dettman, Inabnit, and Sherwood now advance to the national finals in New York City in early 2017. Their success marks the fourteenth time in the last nineteen years that a team from UM has advanced to the national finals; a performance unmatched by any other law school in the country. During that time, UM teams have also won the region’s best-brief award eight times.
