FAQs

You do NOT need a LinkedIn profile to use LinkedIn Learning. You get access to LinkedIn Learning through your NetID. You may choose to link to your LinkedIn profile, but it is not required.

Other users and your LinkedIn connections will not be able to see what you have viewed, unless you choose to share it on your LinkedIn profile. Admin users (OOLD staff) can access and retain the following information:

  1. Learning activity, such as courses viewed or completed

  2. Profile information, such as your name, work title, and profile photo

  3. Any courses from your personal account that you've transferred to your group account

Others may be granted sub-admin privileges in order to create groups. If you are a member of a group, that sub-admin will have access to information about users in their groups.

LinkedIn will not give your organization access to private activity from your personal LinkedIn account, such as:

  1. Your connection

  2. Your private messages

  3. Any job search activity, such as job posts you've viewed

  4. Any learning courses you've viewed in your personal account

As administrators, OOLD will review analytic data about popular courses, skills, or employee needs. They may review compliance or assigned content completion but are not interested in tracking individual users' activity. Contact Jasmine Laine if you have questions.

All full and part time employees with an active NetID have access to LinkedIn learning. Student employees do not have access. Here are detailed instructions for logging in.

You will be able to receive more personalized recommendations and post certificates of completion on your profile.

Students (including student employees) do not have access to LinkedIn Learning.

If you want to recommend a course to others, you can click on the “more” button, and get a shareable link. You can put that link in an email or on a website. University employees (or others with LinkedIn Learning access) will be able to log in and view the content.

In order to assign content to people or groups (such as your team), you need curator or sub-administrator privileges. If you would like to request one of these privileges, contact contact Jasmine Laine at the Office of Organizational Learning and Development.

The University can add custom content to LinkedIn Learning for UM employees to view. In order to do this, you need curate or sub-administrator privileges, or you can request OOLD to upload the content for other employees to use. To request one of those privileges or to have OOLD upload custom content, contact contact Jasmine Laine at the Office of Organizational Learning and Development.

If you are an admin/sub-admin or curator user, you can assign or recommend courses to users within your group, and you will be able to see who has (or hasn't) completed them. If you are not a curator or admin, you will not be able to see who completes the content you shared with others.

You can access the courses or learning paths you've completed from your Learning History page. To access your Learning History page:

  1. Click your profile picture in the upper right corner of your LinkedIn Learning homepage.

  2. Click Learning Historyfrom the dropdown.

You're in control of what learning activity is shared with your network. For example, you have the option to:

  1. Add completed courses to your profile.
  1. Share courses with your LinkedIn network.

UM values lifelong learning and encourages our employees to invest time and effort into their own professional development. You should discuss your particular professional goals and the work time you allocate to professional development with your supervisor.
