Culinary Arts Certificates and Degrees
Big Sky Culinary Institute currently offers two dedicated paths of study for those interested in pursuing education in culinary arts. All options include significant hands-on training with 90% of classes being dedicated labs in our new, world-class kitchens. Courses run in block schedules; enrollment should start during the fall semester, unless otherwise advised.
The Certificate of Applied Science (CAS) in Culinary Arts is a 45 credit, three-semester, option for those wanting to enter the food and beverage industry as an entry-level cook. This certificate is the appropriate path for those wishing to advance their cooking skills without wanting to pursue a career in the food service industry.
The Associates of Applied Science (AAS) in Food Service Management is a 63 credit, four-semester, option for those wishing to enter the food and beverage industry as a mid-level cook or entry-level manager, or for those wishing to own and operate their own food service business. This option includes basic leadership and operations management training in various areas of the industry, as well as managing and operating both of our food and beverage outlets: Blackfoot Cafe and Iris Coffee Bar. AAS students are also required to participate in a 150-hour externship at a location of their choice that will help them obtain first-hand knowledge of the area of the industry this wish to enter upon graduation. Graduates are eligible to receive certification from the American Culinary Federation as a Certified Culinarian (CC) upon successful completion of this degree.
