New Ways to Get Involved with National Geographic

New National Geographic Society Website

National Geographic Society recently launched a new website. The education section contains an incredible resource library to bring the spirit of exploration into the classroom with hundreds of free National Geographic resources for educators searchable by grade level, content area, and subject.

National Geographic's Educator Certification

National Geographic’s Educator Certification fall online cohort is open for enrollment until October 21. The certification program seeks to inspire Pre-K through 12 formal and informal educators to teach students about the world in innovative and interdisciplinary ways. The course will run September 10 to December 2 and is self paced.

Geo-Inquiry Online Course

The Geo-Inquiry online course is also open for enrollment until October 12. The Geo-Inquiry Process is an instructional strategy that, when used in classrooms, helps students develop the attitudes, skills, knowledge, and tools of a geographer. 

Grosvenor Teacher Fellow Program

The Grosvenor Teacher Fellow Program is a professional development opportunity for Pre-K-12 educators made possible by a partnership between Lindblad Expeditions and the National Geographic Society. An annual competitive application process is used to select educators and host them aboard Lindblad Expeditions’ voyages for a life-changing, field-based experience. The call for applications is now open and closes on January 3. Note that applicants must be National Geographic Certified Educators and they can complete that process with the fall cohort


The GeoChallengeis an annual themed and standards-based competition from the National Geographic Society that challenges student groups in grades five through eight across the United States to develop a creative solution to a real-world problem. Registration is now live and the deadline to register and submit a project is January 15.


The National Geographic GeoBee is an annual competition designed to inspire and reward students' curiosity about the world. Students in grades four through eight from nearly 10,000 schools across the United States will compete in the 2019 National Geographic GeoBee for a chance to win college scholarships and the glory of being the National Geographic GeoBee Champion. Registration for the 2018-2019 school year is now open with a deadline of January 25. This program does have a registration fee. 

Explorer Classroom

Explorer Classroom connects classrooms around the world with National Geographic Explorers, bringing science, exploration, and conservation to life through live video events.
