Personal Summary

Baritone Stephen Kalm serves as Professor of Music and was previously the Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Montana. Naionally, he performed with the the Houston Grand Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Lake George Opera Festival, Minnesota Opera, Connecticut Opera, Cincinnati Opera, and The Pennsylvania Opera Theatre. International venues include Carnegie Hall, The Next Wave Festival at BAM, The Lincoln Center Festival, The Knitting Factory, the Bang on the Can Festival, The European Cultural Capital Festival in Copenhagen, June Festival in Paris, the Avignon Festival, Filarmonica de Bogota, the Spoleto USA Festival, Beyond Baroque Festival, Bern Biennale and the Encontros Arcarte Festival in Lisbon. Commercial recordings include the role of Franco Hartmann in Meredith Monk’s Atlas for ECM, as well as Ben Johnston’s Five Fragments for New World Records, the premiere recording of Harry Partch’s Seventeen Lyrics of Li Po for Tzadik Records, William Harper’s Snow Leopard on CafePress, Harry Partch’s The Wayward on Wergo, the title role of Benjamin Franklin in John Carbon’s Benjamin on Zimbel Records, and in 2023, Tikkun Olam: Jewish High Holiday Music for Gothic Records. 

In 1997, Stephen received a New York Dance and Performance (Bessie) Award for his performance in Meredith Monk’s opera,The Politics of Quiet. Closer to home, the baritone has sung with the Billings, Bozeman, Butte, Glacier, Great Falls, Helena, Missoula Symphony Orchestras, Missoula Children’s Theatre, Montana Lyric Opera, and the String Orchestra of the Rockies. In 2011, he sang the role of Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro with the Montana Lyric Opera and in 2012, he portrayed Tevye in UM’s Schools of Music and Theatre & Dances’ production of Fiddler on the Roof and in 2019, the title role in UM Opera Theatre’s production of Gianni Schicchi. In 2014, he sang on two separate occasions at Carnegie Hall. His performance of The Wayward was selected as one of the the top ten performances of 2014 by the NY Times. Stephen has a B.M. in vocal performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, an M.A. from Queens College, and a D.M.A from The City University of New York. He received the the 2002 Most Distinguished Faculty Award from UM’s School of Fine Arts and in 2015 was honored with UM’s Robert T. Panzer Presidential Humanitarian Award and the Missoula Cultural Council’s Individual Artist Award. He is a member of the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGAMA) and the Actor's Equity Association (AEA).
