Freshman Orientation Options

Welcome to the University of Montana Family!

We are excited you chose to become a Grizzly! Here's some information to help you get started with your transition to campus. The New Student Orientation experience extends beyond course registration. It provides you an opportunity to learn about; all the wonderful things we have to offer outside the classroom, the tools we have to help you be a successful student, your new responsibilities as a UM student, as well as some of the situations you might encounter now that you're living away from home.

Be sure to complete the Pre-Orientation Checklist and your My Academics tasks!

UM Mountain Campus Freshman

As an incoming first-year student you will be pre-registered in a set of major core courses, which have been determined by your intended major's department. Students still considering your options will be registered for the courses that will help you decide on a major. You tell us your interests - we will tailor a program specific to your needs. Please note that all students who complete My Academics on time will have the same access to courses regardless of which orientation they plan to attend.

On-Campus Orientation Sessions

New Student Orientation is designed to provide you with an early college experience with your future classmates and the campus community, and spans three days. Please plan accordingly.

Summer Orientation: June 20-22, 2018

  • Check-in at University Center Atrium between 10:00AM and 1:30PM on Wednesday
  • Orientation begins at 2:00PM on Wednesday

Summer Orientation includes an additional $150 supplemental Summer Orientation fee. After registering, you will be sent a confirmation email that instructs you how to submit payment and complete your registration. This fee is non-refundable and includes:

  • Housing in the Residence Halls for the student for two nights (not available for family members or guests)
  • Student dinner on Wednesday evening, and breakfast and lunch for students and family members on Thursday and Friday.
  • Unlimited family member access to the Family Program

NOTE: Partial refunds of the supplemental Summer Orientation fee are awarded on a case by case basis. To request a partial refund, please contact orientation@mso.umt.edu.

Fall Orientation: August 22-24, 2018

Fall Orientation is designed for students who do not attend Summer Orientation. Students will receive the same information, while making only one trip to Missoula right before classes begin.

Spring Orientation: January 17-19, 2018

Missoula College Freshman

We have launched a new, online orientation that will walk you through the steps necessary to clear your holds, learn about our registration system, familiarize yourself with campus resources, schedule an advising appointment, and register for classes.

All incoming Missoula College students are encouraged to take the Online Orientation. This is the quickest way you can be advised and register for fall courses, and you do not need to attend an on-campus orientation if you complete the online module and advising ahead of time.

Accessing the Online Orientation

  • You can find your NetID using the online NetID Lookup Tool. If you have never logged in with your NetID, your initial password is the last six digits of your UM ID number (begins with 790).
  • Log into your Moodle Account, (NetID Login)
  • Access "Missoula College UM Online Orientation"
  • Complete Orientation Steps
  • Contact your department's Academic Advisor (contact information included in the Online Orientation)
  • Register for courses online (after receiving your Advising PIN from your Academic Advisor)
    • NOTE: If you have not cleared all of your holds, you will not be able to make an advising appointment.

Optional On-Campus Orientation Sessions

If you would rather attend an orientation program in person, you're welcome to attend one of the on-campus orientations listed below.

Missoula College students are also welcome to attend additional orientation events at the University of Montana once they attend a Missoula College orientation/registration session.

Fall Orientation: August 23, 2018

Spring Orientation: January 18, 2018

  • All Majors Morning Session | 8:00AM - 12:00PM | (2019 Registration Open in September)

Summer Session Admits

Incoming students who choose to begin during Summer Session are in a unique position. You will need to communicate with your academic department so that you are able to speak with an advisor and complete course registration prior to the times our Orientation programs are regularly scheduled. As an incoming First-Year student, you are required to attend an Orientation program. Summer Session students may choose between either Summer or Fall Orientation.

Non-Traditional Freshmen

The University of Montana recognizes your transition may be a bit different. We encourage you to review the schedule of events and attend those sessions that seem relevant to you. While all orientation sessions have value, the two absolutely required of all new students are your academic department advising meeting and the Bystander Intervention Training.

Transfer Students

To be considered a transfer student, you must have completed 12 semester credits at a college or university, post-high school graduation, and earned at least a 2.0 GPA. College credits earned by students still in high school do not count toward this 12 credit requirement. If you are a transfer student, please visit our Transfer Orientation page instead.

Post-Baccalaureate Students

Post-baccalaureate students are not required to complete and orientation program. You are able to register for classes on your own, or contact an academic advisor for assistance.
