New Student Orientation
We are excited you chose to become a Grizzly! Here's some information to help you get started with your transition to campus. The UM Orientation experience extends beyond course registration; it will prepare you for success as you transition to campus. We work to keep programming as relevant and informative as possible.
As an incoming first-year student you will be registered in a set of courses - what we call the "major core courses" - that have been prescribed by your intended major’s department for your first semester. During orientation you will meet with your department's academic advisor and have the opportunity to make changes and additions to your schedule if necessary. In addition to course registration and advising, New Student Orientation provides you an opportunity to learn about all the wonderful things UM has to offer outside the classroom, about the tools we have to help you be a successful student, about your new responsibilities as a UM student, as well as some of the situations you might find yourself in now that you’re living away from home.

Summer Session Students
Incoming students who choose to begin during Summer Session are in a unique position. You will need to communicate with your academic department so that you are able to speak with an advisor and complete course registration prior to the times our Orientation programs are regularly scheduled. As an incoming First-Year student, you are expected to attend an Orientation program, and as such you will be charged the $67 Orientation fee. Summer Session students are expected to choose between either Summer or Fall Orientation.
The University of Montana recognizes that due to the fact you are not coming straight from high school, your transition may be different than the average 18-year old. We have designed some specific Orientation programming for our non-traditional students that runs during the regularily scheduled Orientaiton programs. These sessions are designed specifically to ensure that you are successful at UM from the very first day of classes, and we hope that you take advantage of them.
To register, follow the New Student Orientation options above.
Please note that access to course registration for your major core courses will not be affected, regardless of which Orientation option you choose. Be sure to complete these steps and your department will register you in your major core courses in early June. You will then complete your course registration at Summer or Fall Orientation.
The University includes a mandatory Orientation fee of $67 for all new students in their first-semester tuition and fees. You'll pay tuition and fees in August after you receive your registration/bill.
