Who are the evaluators?

Student Evaluation Committee (SEC)

The SEC is composed of at least three; no more than 7 students who are majors and/or graduate students in the unit and 1 tenured or tenurable faculty observer with no voting rights. SEC members elect a chair.

The SEC reviews course evaluations and seeks or receives relevant evidence from students who have taken courses from or been advisees of the faculty member being evaluated. (Faculty members must have at least one course evaluated each semester and make course evaluations available to the SEC.)

The SEC does not review the evidence prepared by the faculty member for evaluation, nor does it apply the unit or University standards in its review of the faculty member being evaluated.

Faculty Evaluation Committee (FEC)

The FEC is elected annually and must include at least 3 tenured or tenurable faculty and 1 student observer with no voting rights. FEC members elect a chair.

The FEC prepares a written evaluation of each faculty member based on unit standards as well as a summary of its recommendations for retention, salary increment (less-than-normal, normal, and merit), promotion, and tenure. The FEC can solicit additional evidence and information to use in making its evaluation and is responsible for ensuring confidentiality of solicited evidence in some cases. The FEC is responsible for making solicited evidence available to the faculty member being evaluated. In the case of an appeal, the FEC is responsible for timely response.

Department Chair / Director

The Department Chair / Director prepares a written evaluation of each faculty member based on unit standards, the CBA, and on consideration of the evidence submitted by the faculty member, the SEC recommendation, the FEC recommendation, and any additional evidence solicited or received. This evaluation will include the Department Chair / Director's recommendations for retention, salary increment (less-than-normal, normal, and merit), promotion, and tenure. The Department Chair makes confidential ranked recommendations to the Dean on merits based on faculty performance in teaching, research and service. The Department Chair / Director is responsible for making his/her signed evaluation of each faculty member available to them. In the case of an appeal, the Department Chair / Director is responsible for timely response.

Dean

The Dean prepares a written evaluation of each faculty member based on unit standards, the CBA, and on consideration of the evidence submitted by the faculty member, the SEC recommendation, the FEC recommendation, the Department Chair / Director's recommendation, and any additional evidence solicited or received. This evaluation will include the Dean's recommendations for retention, salary increment (less-than-normal, normal, and merit), promotion, and tenure. The Dean shall also prepare a summary list of those he/she has recommended for promotion, merit, or tenure. This dean will rank those recommended for merit in order of priority. The Dean is responsible for making a faculty member's entire evaluation record available to them. In the case of an appeal, the Dean is responsible for timely response.

Provost

The total evaluation record, including any findings and recommendations from the Appeals Committee, informs the Provost's recommendation to the Board of Regents for faculty retention, salary increment (less-than-normal, normal, and merit), promotion, and tenure.
