Aviary Egg Euthanasia

The 2013 AVMA Guidelines on Euthanasia states that bird eggs must be disposed of in a humane manner. Therefore, if eggs are produced by any of the captive birds at the Field Research Station Fort Missoula that are not intended for incubation, they are to be disposed of in the following manner:
1. Eggs < 50% of the incubation period are to be placed in the refrigerator for a
minimum of four hours and then disposed of in the trash.
2. Eggs > than 50% of the incubation period are to be brought to campus and
For purposes of ease of egg euthanasia, it is best to remove any eggs as soon as they are noted so there is no question about incubation periods.
