Research Council

The purpose of the Research Council is to serve as an advisory body to the vice president for research and creative scholarship on matters pertaining to the development of research and creative activities at the University of Montana.

2018 Research Council

Purpose and Goal

It is envisioned that members of the Research Council will be University of Montana-centered, as opposed to touting the accolades of any one department, program, or center, and focus on interdisciplinarity.  The Council will:

  1. Focus on immediate feedback to help inform the University Planning Committee (UPC):
    1. Develop metrics to measure research and creative scholarship (RCS) productivity (See 2015 Research Strategic Plan)
    2. Collate a summary of University-wide RCS productivity based on these metrics.
    3. Offer feedback to UPC as needed.
  2. Revisit other aspects of Research Strategic Plan, with an eye towards interdisciplinary innovations (e.g., a “Cluster Hire” model).
See the working document for RCS metrics that was shared with the full faculty in the spring of 2018.

Structure - 2013

Membership of the Research Council is based upon the relative amounts of external funding and number of full-time faculty in each of the colleges, schools and unit. One function of the Research Council is to review the structure annually to determine the optimum membership.  For the initial year the membership will be:

  • College of Health Professions and Biomedical Sciences (2)
  • College of Education and Human Sciences (1)
  • School of Business Administration (1)

The vice president for research and creative scholarship and the executive director of research and sponsored programs function as ex officio nonvoting members of the council.
