Violence Prevention

People with disabilities can be at risk of disability-related abuse, such as denial of care, destruction or denial of adaptive equipment, or medication manipulation. They are also at higher risk of other forms of abuse, such as physical, psychological, and sexual violence. Abuse can come from a wide variety of perpetrators, including friends, family members, and personal assistance providers.

There are disability-related barriers to leaving violent relationships and situations, including a fear of losing independence, fear of not being believed, or dependence on the perpetrator for assistance with essential activities of daily living.

Our research has explored these topics, as well as solutions to address these issues, including safety awareness programs, services and interventions, and other strategies.
