RTC:Rural Disability State Map Series & Disability Counts Updates

June 2, 2021

With the recent launch of our new website, RTC:Rural is proud to announce the release of our full state map series showing disability rates and other characteristics at the county level using five year aggregate estimates made available by US Census American Community Survey (ACS) data for years 2013-2017.

All fifty states, with the addition of Puerto Rico, now each have fourteen maps showing the rate of disability in each county, along with disability type and employment status, veteran status, difficulty with independent living, poverty, and disability rate by sex. Each map is displayed with a text description highlighting trends and patterns that stand out for each state.

We hope that visualization tools like these will inform policy makers, community stakeholders, advocates, and people with disabilities on the unique needs and experiences in their communities.

Additionally, we have updated our Disability Counts step-by-step interactive tool with the most recent ACS dataset released by the US Census for the years 2015-2019. Users can access these data by selecting the state and counties they’re interested in, along with specific characteristics, and download the dataset for their use.
