Ecological stoichiometry is the tracking of elements through ecosystems. We have used this approach to understand how symbiotic fungi provide phosphorus and nitrogen to their host bark beetles. Without these fungi providing nutrients these beetles could not survive. In the process we found insects with the lowest phosphorus contents ever reported. Living in wood is not easy!
