Support for Survivors

Sexual assaults take many forms. All are serious crimes and can have significant physical and emotional repercussions.  Assaults can happen between people who are married, dating, acquaintances, strangers, and cross-gender or within the same gender. SARC has advocacy services to support you.


Healing from sexual assault or abuse can be a long and difficult process. As a survivor, it can be easy to become impatient with yourself, overwhelmed, afraid, or angry about the long-term effects the assault or abuse may have on your life.

Discovering a comfortable balance between acknowledging these effects and feeling "damaged forever" is a challenge that most survivors encounter in their healing process. It can be easy to deny the assault or abuse, unfortunately that will not make it go away. We know most survivors reach a place in their recovery when the assault or abuse no longer feels like the epicenter of their life.

Here are some effective, long-term healing strategies for people recovering from sexual assault or abuse:

  • Someone to listen to you, objectively and without judgment
  • Someone who believes you
  • Someone who knows options, resources and supports available to you
  • Someone who will empower you to make the best decisions for yourself
  • Someone who can provide information for secondary survivors (friends, family, faculty & staff)

These things are not a guarantee for quick, painless, stress-free recovery. They can, however, help you reduce the stress in your life, help you feel good about yourself as a person and survivor, and energize yourself for the process of healing.
