At the Alexander Blewett III School of Law, students become practice-ready attorneys through the integration of theory with practical experience. Students draft contracts, create corporations, counsel clients, negotiate transactions, prepare and probate wills, try a case before a jury, and argue an appeal.
The clinic requirement reinforces the goal of preparing graduates for the practice of law. All third-year students practice in a public interest setting, either in an "in-house" clinic at the law school or under the supervision of an attorney in the community. Students apply the skills and knowledge learned during the first two years of law school to a practice with real clients.
For more than 100 years, the Alexander Blewett III School of Law at the University of Montana has educated lawyers and prepared them to serve society. The fall 2016 negotiation competition team placed second in the nation at national competition after placing first for the third year in a row at the Northwest Regional Negotiation Competition. Additionally, the fall 2016 moot court competition team placed first at their regional competition, while winning the award for best appellate brief. The UM moot court team has one of the more successful records in the competition.
