UM Sustainability is a coalition representing all sustainability initiatives. It represents the diverse efforts on campus to improve the sustainability of our campus operations, integrate sustainability into the classroom, and demonstrate our commitment to social, economic, and environmental health. Specifically, this website is maintained and overseen by the Office of Sustainability and its partners. We welcome comments and feedback and encourage all members of the UM community to participate.

  • Eva Smiling

    Eva Rocke (she/hers), Sustainability Director

    At UM, Eva facilitates campuswide sustainability efforts including the implementation of greenhouse gas reduction strategies, exploration of renewable energy possibilities for UM, carbon offset purchasing, and various other projects to help UM reach its carbon neutrality goal. Her work also includes engaging students, faculty, and staff in all of these efforts and making the social and economic dimensions of sustainability part of UM's sustainability vision. UM's educational mission and sustainability values are inextricably connected and Eva's work includes demonstrating these connections on campus, in the classroom, and in the broader Missoula community.

  • Derek smiling

    Derek Kanwisher (he/him), Project Coordinator

    Derek Kanwischer oversees UM’s Electronics Recycling Program and a variety of sustainability initiatives to help promote the UM’s sustainability commitments. Derek has been with the University of Montana for 3 years. He has graduate degrees in Environmental Studies and UM’s Master of Public Administration program and has worked professionally as a program manager in higher education and numerous non-profits in Missoula and more broadly. Outside of work, Derek might be found running the local trails or on extended weekend excursions to explore our public lands.

  • Jim looks into distance

    Jim Lyon (he/him), Recycling Coordinator

    Jim is a University of Montana alum, having earned his degree in environmental studies before coming to work for our recycling team. His primary duty on campus is the consolidation and baling of recyclable materials, including the removal of hundreds of pounds of cardboard that the UM campus produces each week. He also oversees and works closely with our student recycling workers to make sure recycling hubs around campus are sufficiently serviced. Jim is passionate about the environment and all of Earth’s creatures.

  • Tayli Hillyard on an e-bike

    Tayli Hillyard (she/her), Sustainability Engagement Coordinator

    Tayli is the Sustainability Engagement Coordinator and works directly with UM Sustainability and ASUM Transportation. In her role, she oversees all sustainability and transportation outreach and communications, including events, website design, social media, tabling, and more. Tayli is also the chair of the Kless Sustainability Committee and oversees the Kless Sustainability Fund. She graduated from Utah State University with her B.S. in Environmental Studies and is finishing her M.S. in Environmental Planning. She loves helping everyone she knows learn about sustainability and environmental stewardship. She is passionate about active transportation, e-mobility, and accessible transportation for all. In her spare time, you can find her riding her e-scooter, playing softball, watching basketball, sewing tee-shirt quilts, volunteering for Days for Girls, or baking.
