What to Do Before Contacting Faculty

Once you’ve found faculty you are interested in working with, continue to learn more about them. Have they been featured in UM News or other media sources for their work? What kinds of projects or questions do they or their lab work on? What are their most recent publications or projects? Do they work with specific groups, in specific geographic areas or ecosystems, or focus on specific species or topics?

Reading publications or engaging with materials created by faculty is the best way to gain insight into their work and methods. When you contact faculty, you’ll want to show that you’ve engaged with their scholarly work and understand how your interests fit into their theirs.
