Student name: Cody Magpie

What degree is the student seeking?
BSW

Why did you select to pursue this degree?

I am currently pursuing my Bachelor’s in Social Work through the 2+2 program. I’ve achieved an Associates of Arts in Addiction Studies at Chief Dull Knife College, located in Lame Deer, Montana. The 2+2 BSW Program allows me to remain in my community and get my degree.

I am currently accumulating clinical hours to obtain my License as an Addiction Counselor at Bighorn Valley Health Center. My next step is to pursue a Master’s in Social Work at the University of Montana. I ultimately want obtain Doctorate’s in either Psychology or Sociology.

When I first started my journey into higher education, I knew that I wanted to help others. I met some amazing people that were involved with Behavioral Health and helped open my eyes to social work. After meeting the staff here in the social work program, I felt good about the direction that I was going in. Being a Social Worker aligns with my personal principles of helping those who are in need and advocating for others that need additional services.

Why have they been selected for student of the month?

As an LAC-Candidate employed at the Big Horn Clinic, Cody is a great role-model in the 2+2 BSW Program. His experience working in an agency that truly embodies integrated care shows in his interactions with other students and assignments. Cody displays the leadership qualities that will benefit his community in Lame Deer and Hardin. Sharing his experiences with the class, and applying his new social work foundations within his interprofessional team at the Hardin location of Big Horn Clinic are exactly what the 2+2 BSW Program was designed for- “Growing our Own, Right at Home”
