Adjunct Profesor Courtney Cowgill is an editor, writer, teacher and farmer who began teaching at the university in 2006 when she co-taught the Rural News Network class. She then took a few years off and began teaching again in fall 2012.
Cowgill specializes in teaching online courses, specifically in legislative news, feature writing and rural news. In addition to teaching at UM, she is the managing editor of PBS MediaShift and runs a small farm with her husband. She has worked as a newswoman for the Associated Press and as an intern with Lee Newspapers (covering the Montana Legislature), The Chronicle of Higher Education and the Great Falls Tribune. From 2005 – 2009 she co-founded and was editor in chief of the online startup news magazine NewWest.Net.
Cowgill received her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Montana.
She writes for various publications about farm life and about media for PBS MediaShift and the Online Publishers Association. She and her husband run a small-diversified farm near Power in central Montana where they grow 30 acres of vegetables, turkeys and grains with two small children in tow.
