 President Announces Climate Action Plan

UM President George M. Dennison celebrated Earth Week by presenting the University's Climate Action Plan to campus and area community members. Dennison announced the University's plan to become carbon neutral by 2020 during Earth Week festivities April 21 on the UM Oval.

"Everyone today realizes the critical importance of finding ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to protect an increasingly fragile planet," Dennison said. "Our dependence on others to provide for our energy needs subjects us to rising prices and increasing damage to the environment."

In 2007 Dennison was one of the first 100 in the nation to sign the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment, dedicating UM to reduce carbon emissions to zero. Since then the University has taken major steps to become a leading model in the community and the nation for ways to eliminate global warming emissions.

The recently completed Climate Action Plan is a work of collaboration among UM administrators, faculty, staff and students with representatives from the Missoula community to determine actions that will lead the University to carbon neutrality by 2020. The goal now is to implement the strategies of the Climate Action Plan as soon as possible to reduce or offset UM carbon emissions in the next 10 years.

The UM Office of Sustainability, the Sustainable Campus Committee and the Associated Students of UM Sustainability Center will track progress and share information by publishing a greenhouse gas inventory every two years and other progress along the way.

"The Climate Action Plan will be amended as we learn through implementation," said UM Sustainability Coordinator Cherie Peacock. "Measuring and sharing successes are essential to encourage further actions."

 May Events Honor President Dennison

UM will host the "George M. Dennison Symposium on the Future of Higher Education" and a reception Monday, May 10, to honor UM President George Dennison and Jane Dennison. The Dennisons have been a driving force in the success of UM since George Dennison took the reins of the University on Aug. 15, 1990. Dennison plans to retire Aug. 15, 2010 -- 20 years from the day he became the University's 16th president.

The symposium will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Montana Theatre of UM's Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center. The reception will follow from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom. Both events are free and open to the public.

Keynote speakers at the symposium will be E. Gordon Gee, president of The Ohio State University; C. Peter Magrath, senior presidential adviser of the College Board and president emeritus of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities; and President Dennison.

The keynote presentations will be followed by a discussion with Montana Commissioner of Higher Education Sheila Stearns, Montana State University President Waded Cruzado, UM Regents Professor of Philosophy Albert Borgmann and UM Regents Professor of History Paul Lauren. UM Provost Royce Engstrom will serve as the discussion moderator.

For more information, call the President's Office at 243-2311.

 UM Educator Receives National Award

Garry Kerr, an instructor in UM's Department of Anthropology, has received the Center for Public Anthropology's Eleanor Roosevelt Global Citizenship Award. The award honors Kerr's exceptionally effective participation on the center's Community Action Online website project, as well as his wider activities in the public sphere.

Less than 5 percent of those who teach introductory anthropology courses across North America receive the award, which honors an individual, project, organization or institution for outstanding contributions to ethical education, democratic governance and public activism.

Kerr was nominated for the award for inspiring UM students to partake in the global community and think critically, respond intelligently and act responsibly.

"Garry is almost legendary for the praise his teaching consistently receives from so many UM students," said Christopher Comer, dean of UM's College of Arts and Sciences. "It is wonderful to see him getting much deserved national attention."

'Walk N Roll' Days This Week

The Associated Students of UM Office of Transportation encourages people to get to campus this week any way other than driving alone during "Walk N Roll" days. The event is held annually at UM as part of Missoula's Bike Walk Bus Week.

Options for getting to and from campus include walking, biking, carpooling, riding Park-N-Ride shuttles or taking Mountain Line buses, which are free throughout Missoula during Bike Walk Bus Week.

During "Walk N Roll" days, volunteers at all University entrances will hand out raffle tickets to those who arrive on campus using options other than driving alone. Raffle tickets also can be picked up at the University Center for those who use other means of transportation and don't find a "Walk N Roll" volunteer where they enter campus.

Raffle prizes include a cruiser bike, bike trailer, headlights, locks and numerous other donated gifts. The raffle drawing will take place at noon Friday, April 30, on the Mansfield Mall, located between the University Center and Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library. The popular band Broken Valley Roadshow will provide entertainment.

MFA Thesis Exhibitions Open At UM Gallery

Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibitions of Cathryn Sugg and Rebecca Weed will be presented by the Gallery of Visual Arts and the School of Art at UM April 29-May 14.

Sugg's mixed media paintings in the exhibit "Inbetween" attempt to define the space that exists between so-called opposites. "Recollection" is a series of figurative paintings by Weed that relate to feelings of loss, the passing of time and apprehension in how to proceed in life.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday. For more information call gallery Director Cathryn Mallory at 243-2813 or e-mail gallery.visarts@umontana.edu.

Day Of Dialogue Organizers Seek Proposals

Organizers are now accepting presentation proposals for the fifth annual Day of Dialogue at UM, slated for Thursday, Oct. 28, in the University Center. The campuswide symposium features workshops, exhibits and entertainment that focus on diversity issues such as race, gender, ethnicity, ability/disability, religion, sexual orientation and class.

Ideas about ways that administrators, faculty, staff, students or community members can participate are:
  • Present research findings.
  • Discuss professional interests.
  • Conduct workshops or other professional development or training sessions.
  • Provide entertainment during a noon performance.
  • Coordinate a panel discussion, debate or other interactive session.
  • Create or host an art exhibit or other interactive media experience.
Proposals are due Friday, May 21, and applications can be downloaded on the Day of Dialogue website.

Faculty members may include the Day of Dialogue in syllabuses and curricula or allow students to attend learning opportunities in lieu of the traditional class meeting time.

Departments that plan to hold open house events during Day of Dialogue should notify the planning committee for listing in the program.

For more information about ways to get involved, e-mail dayofdialogue@mso.umt.edu or call 243-5622. For questions about presentations or proposal submissions, e-mail lucy.france@mso.umt.edu.

 Workshop Answers Copyright Questions

Have you ever wondered if it's OK to play a YouTube video for a class, if you can use an image in a manuscript, if you can hand out 35 copies of an article to students, or what you can and can't put on Blackboard or eRes?

Get answers to these and other copyright questions at a free workshop offered by the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library on Wednesday, April 28.

The workshop, presented by Tammy Ravas, media coordinator; Samantha Hines, distance education coordinator; and Claudia Denker, associate legal counsel, will begin at 4 p.m. in the library's Buckhous Room.

Those who plan to attend the workshop are asked to RSVP by calling Kate Zoellner at 243-4421 or e-mailing kate.zoellner@umontana.edu.

 Help UM Recycle

With limited funding and staff, everyone must do their part to have a successful recycling program on campus. Recycling helps reduce UM's carbon footprint to meet Climate Action Plan goals. Following are some ways you can help.

Put recyclable materials in the correct bins:
  • No. 1 and No. 2 plastic, aluminum and tin go in the blue bins with white signs. Empty the containers before recycling.
  • Office paper of any color, including opened envelopes or junk mail, goes in the bins with yellow signs.
  • Newspaper goes in the bins with blue signs.
  • Shredded paper can be put in plastic bags and set next to the blue recycling bins.
Break down cardboard boxes. Put flat and folded boxes behind the bins or in cages/trailers where available. Stomp on the boxes to flatten them and empty the boxes of trash before recycling.

Glass is not currently recyclable on campus, so do not put glass containers in the recycling bins. Do not put trash in bins. Contaminating the recycling bins with non-recyclables may result in all materials being thrown away.

If a Recycling Station needs to be picked up, send a request to the Facilities Services Work Order Desk by e-mail at facs_workorder@mso.umt.edu. Include the location of the station that needs service, a description of the problem, and your department and contact information. You also can call the Work Order Desk at 243-6091. There is no charge for this type of work order, and the recycling crew will make every effort to respond as soon as possible.

For suggestions or more information, call Edi Stan, recycling coordinator, at 243-5795 or e-mail UM_Recycle@mso.umt.edu.
