Randy Geiger
Environmental Engineer
Randy Geiger is an engineering project manager for a mining company. He grew up in a tiny eastern Montana town and attended Montana Tech.
Geiger started working for W.R. Grace in May 1976, about the time the company’s controversial, and very dusty, dry mill was constructed. He ran the dust sampling operation at Libby for Grace. Geiger left the company when the mine closed in 1990.
At Grace, Geiger’s job entailed setting up and running the dust sampling operation at the Libby laboratory. He would quantify the dust levels, then make recommendations based on the information received. Geiger was the company’s first industrial hygienist and his focus was asbestos content in vermiculite.
Geiger conducted the tests at the Libby high school’s running track in 1981. The track had tailings from the Libby mine that Grace had donated to the project. His experiment caused the company to pave over the track with asphalt.
Geiger now lives near Bozeman, Mont. with his family.
