What Can I Do With A Major In Media Arts?

The mission of the School of Media Arts is to provide degree programs tailored to meet the varied needs of students seeking to embark on careers in filmmaking and/or integrated digital media.

We offer a Bachelor of Art in Media Arts, a Master of Fine Arts in Media Arts, and a Minor in Media Arts option. The undergraduate program in the Media Arts Department offers specializations in both Integrated Digital Media and Digital Filmmaking. IDM specialization allows students to maximize their artistic potential through the study of emerging digital technologies and their aesthetic application. They will be trained in the use of industry-standard software programs, and they will create integrated work in new mediums. In addition to the core curriculum, there are opportunities to be involved with credited special topics projects that include website design, promotional trailers, and a variety of collaborative art projects. The DFM specialization provides a collaborative and story-based environment in which students study the art of movie making through the use of digital technologies. Training focuses in the areas of writing, directing and editing, and will cover all aspects of the movie-making process from pre-production through post-production.

For students pursuing the M.F.A. degree, the graduate program in the School of Media Arts focuses on digital filmmaking and provides the student with comprehensive training in the areas of writing, directing and editing. Our spacious graduate lab was designed as a comprehensive post-production space. This secure area, complete with digital editing workstations, provides the students with the kind of professional environment they need to focus on their work. The Media Arts minor program is designed to supplement the work of those undergraduate students whose major area of study can be enhanced through the application of media arts principles and technologies.

To be successful in this dynamic field, students need to challenge themselves and their peers technically and creatively. Both areas of specialization in the Media Arts Program focus on learning how to communicate an artistic vision and how to actualize it in the desired medium. The opportunities for real life work are abundant in this field and many of the students take advantage of getting experience in the community and beyond while pursuing their degree.
