McGill Hall Asbestos Identification and Testing Timeline

Nov. 19, 2018: First complaint of issue in room 212, McGill Hall. No asbestos detected at this time.

Dec. 12, 2018: While making a routine repair to an oil valve, Facilities technician noticed white powder and immediately called asbestos manager. Once on scene, asbestos manager confirmed presence of asbestos. Area contained.

Jan. 19, 2019: Initial testing conducted – two wipe tests and air samples.

 Jan. 21, 2019: Eurofins Asbestos Analytical Reports (T190212 and T190213) received – wipe and air sampling.

Jan. 23, 2019: Additional sampling protocol implemented. More samples collected.

Jan. 24, 2019: Additional wipe samples collected.

Jan. 25, 2019: Eurofins Asbestos Analytical Report (T190299) received — air sampling.

Jan. 28, 2019:  Completed abatement of Room 212. Suite still closed.

Eurofins Asbestos Analytical Report (T190331) received at 4 p.m. — wipe tests.

At 4:10 p.m., University officials met and decision was made to close ASUM Child Care Center in McGill Hall due to the presence of asbestos and to relocate the children and staff to the nearby Phyllis J. Washington College of Education and Human Services Building.

Parents were notified beginning at 6 p.m.

Overnight, Facilities staff moved ASUM Child Care Center to new location.

Jan. 29, 2019: ASUM Child Care Center opened in its new, temporary location in Phyllis J. Washington College of Education and Human Services.

Conducted additional sampling on areas in McGill adjacent to ASUM Child Care Center.

Jan. 31, 2019: Eurofins Asbestos Analytical Report (T190386 and T190368) received.

University officials met and decision was made to close McGill Hall until further notice due to the presence of asbestos.

University officials met with parents of children at ASUM Child Care Center.

Feb. 1, 2019: University officials met with faculty, staff and students impacted by closure of McGill Hall.

 Feb. 4, 2019: President Bodnar sends message to campus community.

Feb. 6, 2019: Air and wipe samples taken in Craighead Child Care facility.

Eurofins Asbestos Analytical Report (T190454) received - wipe samples. University officials and certified industrial hygienist meet with faculty, staff and students impacted by the closure of McGill Hall.

Feb. 7, 2019: Eurofins Asbestos Analytical report received - air samples (T190496, T190497 and T190498).

Feb. 8, 2019: Eurofins Asbestos Analytical report received - wipe samples (T190500). University officials greet parents at the Craighead Child Care facility to given to them a verbal update on air sampling and the arrival of surfrace load test results later that day. A 4 p.m., the decision is made to consolidate all of the ASUM Child Care centers to one location in the College of Education and Human Sciences building. Messages sent to parents from ASUM Child Care Director Vicki Olson about the move and from UM Vice President for Operations and Finance Paul Lasiter about working with UM Risk Management.

Feb. 9, 2019: Message from Paul Lasiter was resent to parents by VP Cathy Cole.

Feb. 10, 2019: Pipe bursts in Mansfield Library, causing flooding on all floors. Library is closed until 3 p.m. After 3 p.m., campus is notified that because of flooidng, ceiling tiles in the Mansfield Center were damaged, and per University procedure, will be tested for the presence of asbestos, and the library will remain closed for clean-up through at least Feb. 12.
