Graduate nondegree admission is a graduate status allowing students to receive graduate credit for course work but who have not been formally admitted to a graduate degree program.
Graduate nondegree applications are processed through the Graduate School.
Up to nine semester nondegree graduate credits (or the credits earned during a single semester, whichever is greater) may be applied toward a subsequent degree program, with the approval of the student's program chair and the Graduate Dean. Acceptance as a graduate nondegree student does not imply future admission to a degree program.
Graduate nondegree students may take courses for either graduate or undergraduate credit, as defined by the university catalog. Graduate credits will be assigned automatically unless a request for undergraduate credit is submitted to the Graduate School by the fifth week of the semester.
Applicants admitted as graduate nondegree students are NOT ELIGIBLE for financial aid. Graduate nondegree students are assessed the graduate level tuition and fees at the master's level rate for all credits taken.
Applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree (or higher degree) from a regionally accredited college or university prior to enrollment in the graduate nondegree status.
Receipt of the following credentials in the Graduate School office constitutes a complete application for graduate nondegree status.

This is a non-refundable fee payable with the online application.
3.) Paper Applications
If you are unable to or choose not to apply online, you may request a paper application from the Graduate School at email@example.com or by calling (406) 243-2572. Effective October 1, 2005, there will be an additional $9 charge for processing the paper form making the paper application fee $60. When calling or e-mailing, please provide us with the following information:
4.) Lawful Permanent Residents or International Applicants Only
Applicants whose native language is not English, must submit TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) scores. If the TOEFL score is below 580 (paper-based test), 237 (computer-based test) or 92 (internet-based test), the IELTS score is below 7.0 or the MELAB score is below 82, applicants may be required to complete English as a Second Language course(s).
Applicants who are graduates of English-speaking universities are not required to take the TOEFL, IELTS or MELAB.
5.) Pre-Registration Immunization Requirement Form
All applicants are required to submit a completed Pre-Registration Immunization Requirement Medical History Record to the Curry Health Center two weeks prior to registration. It is especially important that the immunization record be complete and accurate and validated by a health official.
**If you will be taking distance classes ONLY fill out the distance learner form and return it to The Graduate School to get your health hold removed. If this form is submitted, the system will not allow you to register for on-campus classes.**
6.) Deadline - We highly recommend graduate nondegree applications be submitted prior to the first day of the semester. This allows applicants adequate time to submit a pre-registration immunization requirement form to the Curry Health Center, register for courses, finalize, and pay tuition/fees prior to late fee assessment.
Please note: The online graduate nondegree application is not available after the end of the first week of the term. After the second week of the term and prior to the end of the third week of the term, you must contact the Graduate School to fill out a paper application.
Students who previously attended The University of Montana in a graduate nondegree status and have not been enrolled for two years (24 months) or more, use the graduate nondegree readmission form to reapply for the same status. A $20 application fee payable to The University of Montana must accompany the readmission form.
Students whose only previous enrollment has been in continuing education courses must use the standard graduate nondegree application to apply.
Students readmitted after a 24 month absence must complete a Pre-Registration Immunization Requirement Form and submit it to the Curry Health Center before registration will be permitted.
