TESOL Certification Requirements

TESOL teacher candidates must complete 120 hours of instruction and practicum to receive the TESOL Online Certificate from UM. This includes 100 online instructor hours spread across 12 units. The final 20 hours of the certificate encompass an in-person practicum of classroom observation and instruction.

Some of the units covered include learner identification, linguistics, teaching theories and curriculum design. Teacher candidates are expected to review course materials and complete weekly assignments based on each unit throughout the 12-14-week program. The flexible nature of this asynchronous model means students can complete their week’s work on their own time.

TESOL Practicum Experience

The 20-hour practicum comprises classroom observation and instruction. It can be completed in a variety of different classrooms, including PreK-12 schools, non-government organizations and colleges. During the practicum, you’ll observe a TESOL instructor and have a chance to use your 100 hours of instructional training to lead or assist in classroom activities.

TESOL teacher candidates have some flexibility when completing their 20-hour practicum. Students who need extra time to complete the 20 hours can request a two-month extension after the completion of the 12-week online instruction portion of the certificate.
