Mobile Summer Institute (MOSI)

Participants during a MOSI workshop.

The annual Mobile Summer Institute (MOSI) on scientific teaching was hosted at the College of Education on June 5-8 by the Office of Organizational Learning and Development. Sixteen participants partook in workshops developed and facilitated by teaching experts that focused on evidence-based active learning strategies that have been shown to improve student understanding and success.

Participants worked together to develop an original, peer-reviewed course module incorporating backward design and learning activities on the topic of their choice. All participants were named Scientific Teaching Fellows upon completion of the workshop.

Since its inception in 2014, the Mobile Summer Institute has trained nearly 1000 faculty at 35 institutions across six countries in scientific teaching. Scientific teaching is a condensation of effective, evidence-based teaching strategies targeted at faculty who understand the importance of evidence-based approaches but may not have formal pedagogical training. It is a student-centered learning approach embedded in Backward Design, a curricular approach focusing on what students learn rather than what teachers cover.
