High School students exploring archival materials at UM's Mansfield Library

In June 2022, the University of Montana History Department hosted the inaugural UM Summer Humanities Institute for High School Students. Thanks to the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), we welcomed eight Montana high schoolers to campus for a week-long institute exploring the History of the Missoula and Bitterroot Valleys. Led by Professors Eric Zimmer and Claire Arcenas and Graduate TA Michael Larmann, students completed a public-facing project on the history of the Missoula Public Library; explored the history of the UM Campus through lectures, guided tours, and scavenger hunts; and experienced first-hand the excitement of research in the Mansfield Library Archives and Special Collections.

We plan to announce the 2023 Summer Institute next winter. Stay tuned!
