Youth Exchange Program (YEP)

About

The Youth Exchange Program (YEP) is a transformative two-week summer experience designed for select rising high school seniors hailing from across Montana and throughout Chicago. This initiative will delve into the foundational principles of democracy, examining them through the lenses of both urban and rural perspectives. The primary objective is to recognize the unique characteristics of each community, fostering a deeper understanding and respect for our differences and appreciation for the commonalities that bind us together.

In our diverse society, where people live, work, and study significantly molds their lives, from their daily activities and environment to the communities they build and connect with.  These choices not only shape their existence but also act as a lens through which they view the world, impacting their perspectives on public policies. Recognizing this profound impact, the urban-rural exchange seeks to bridge the societal gaps that often divide us, emphasizing shared values and aspirations.

Participants will travel to Montana, Chicago, and Washington D.C., and in each community interact with politicians, nonprofit organizations, and community leaders. These immersive engagements will not only enrich their perspectives but also empower them to contribute meaningfully through hands-on community service initiatives. Additionally, students will participate in unique and enjoyable local activities throughout their journey.

At the heart of YEP lies the legacy of Mike Mansfield, the nation’s longest-serving Senate Majority Leader, a figure revered for his principled and thoughtful leadership. Mike Mansfield's remarkable impact on this country’s governance stems from his unparalleled skill in uncovering common ground and adeptly bridging divides, fostering unity and understanding across diverse perspectives. Much like Mansfield's renowned brevity, symbolized by his characteristic response of a simple "yep" to reporters' questions, the program encapsulates a commitment to impactful and concise actions.  By channeling the Mansfield way, YEP aims to instill a sense of purpose and civic responsibility in the next generation of leaders, inspiring them to forge connections across urban and rural landscapes for a more united and harmonious future.
