The class consists of warmup exercises, instructional group shadowboxing that focuses on form and technique, conditioning bouts and a cooldown.  In the group shadowboxing portion of class, you will go over the combo of the day, and you'll have the opportunity to practice it later in the conditioning part of class on the heavy bag, shadowboxing in front of the mirrors and hitting focus mitts.  Conditioning bouts are circuits of total body exercises, hitting the heavy bag, shadowboxing, working on rhythm with the speedbag, and footwork with jump ropes and the agility ladder.  There is also a "prize fight" bout in which you work one-on-one with a trainer hitting focus mitts to improve the precision, speed and power of your techniques and combinations.  During the cooldown, we circle up, stretch, do some core work and get to know one another better.

Meet the Trainers

Andi Armstrong

The assistant director of marketing and operations at Campus Recreation, Andi stays very active.  She has a background in martial arts and took classes in taekwondo, karate and judo as a child.  While studying English literature in graduate school at the University of Montana, Andi participated in boxing club.  After receiving her master’s degree, she practiced kickboxing and self-defense for over five years.  Andi’s super excited to get back into boxing with Pink Gloves and help foster other women’s love for the sport.

Emily Hamant

Emily, a sophomore in the Davidson Honors College, is majoring in wildlife biology and minoring in mathematics. She loves any outdoor activity, but her passions are skiing and backpacking. She's always ready for an adventure and normally isn't studying because she is outside hiking. Emily previously boxed at a gym in Dayton, OH, and wanted to join PGB to improve her skills. She fell in love with the program and started teaching PGB to help get girls interested in boxing. Who doesn't love to punch something?

Taylor Nielsen

Taylor is a senior at the University of Montana majoring in psychology and anthropology with a focus in forensics. She enjoys spending her time reading a good sci-fi novel, riding her bike or spending nice days out by the river. She joined PGB to keep herself active and to open up to new people in a fun and new environment. When presented with the opportunity to teach PGB, she jumped at it, excited to help other girls learn to build skills as well as confidence while in a welcoming and fun atmosphere.

Elli Sullivan

Elli served as a trainer for PGB during the 2015-16 school year and has returned for the 2017-18 academic year.  She is a senior majoring in management information systems and international business.  She works at the Fitness & Recreation Center front desk and also teaches H.I.C. and indoor cycling.
