Big Shift: Changes in Accommodations from high school to college

The transition from high school to college presents a big shift, unique challenges, and opportunities. The table below explains the differences in rights and responsibilities related to accommodations.

High School

University

Self-disclosure

School conducts assessments to identify and evaluate students with disabilities. School notifies instructors who the students with disabilities are.

Students self-identify to the Office for Disability Equity (ODE) to receive accommodations. Students provide documentation of their disability to ODE. After students register with ODE, students notify their accommodation requests to faculty.

Use of accommodations

School often initiates accommodations and services for students.

Students initiate requests for accommodations. Students have a right to refuse to request or use accommodations.

Academic expectations

School may modify academic standards for students with disabilities. Examples include less homework or changes in test formats. Parents and teachers may provide frequent reminders of deadlines.

Students with disabilities are expected to meet or exceed academic standards with or without accommodations. Accommodations are designed to provide equal access and full participation in education. Students are expected to monitor their own progress, schedules, and deadlines.
