River Gear List

Personal Gear (you provide)

All of the following are required on this trip. If you do not personally own them, we recommend purchasing from a store, borrowing from a friend, or renting from the Outdoor Program. 

Required Items:

  • Sleeping bag warm rated at 10°F or less, line stuff sack with plastic bag to waterproof your sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • River shoes such as sneakers, Chacos, Tevas, etc.  NO FLIP-FLOPS! They fall off easily.
  • Camp shoes comfortable for walking on land
  • Rain gear (jacket and pants) that really work
  • Long pants (wool or fleece)
  • Long underwear (wool or polypro)
  •  Shirt or sweater (wool or fleece)
  • Warm winter hat (wool or fleece)
  • Extra camp socks
  • Quick-dry shorts or bathing suit
  • 2  t-shirts 
  • Sunglasses with strap
  • Hat with brim
  • Cup, bowl, spoon
  • Two, 1-quart water bottles
  • Headlamp or flashlight with fresh batteries
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.)
  • Medications/prescriptions
  • Chapstick, sunscreen

Recommended Items:

  • Bug spray
  • Hand lotion
  • Camera

Optional Items:

  • Day pack or small fanny pack for short day hikes
  • Fishing license - must have license and Montana regulations
  • Crazy Creek chair
  • Muck boots/rain boots
  • Journal/field notebook and pencil or pen
  • Whistle

Not Allowed:

  • Cell Phones
  • Alcohol
  • Illegal Drugs
  • Recreational Drugs, including marijuana

Group Gear (we provide)

  • Canoes, paddles, personal floatation devices (PFDs)
  • Tent
  • Pots, pans, cutting board, scrubby, spatula, stove fuel, lighter
  • Dry bags
  • Soap
  • Hand sanitzer
  • Water purification (pump or aquamira)
  • Water jugs
  • Trowel/small shovel
  • First aid kit (carried by group leaders)
  • Map
  • Bear spray, bear hang
  • Emergency communcation device

Food

Trip leaders will plan and provide food. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions, please include them on your medical form. Feel free to call us at (406) 243-5361 with any questions or concerns.

Rentals

These are available at half-price at the Outdoor Program:

  • Sleeping pads
  • Sleeping bags
Note:  The Outdoor Program will provide personal floatation devises (PFDs) as well as dry bags to the participants. Please arrive with all of the above in an easily compressed bag (duffel, garbage, etc.) so that we have space to pack them during the trip.
