The Montana Museum of Art & Culture acquires and preserves art that expresses the spirit of the American West and its relationship to the world. As a university and state museum, MMAC presents exhibitions and educational programs that explore local, regional and global themes.
It is the vision of the Montana Museum of Art & Culture to serve as:
*A celebrated fine arts and cultural museum.
*A national model for university museums.
*A beacon for The University of Montana.
*A bridge between UM students, faculty and staff and the wider community.
*A significant contributor to UM's academic research and scholarly activities.
*The best possible stewards of the Permanent Collection, increasing its public value, integrity and accessibility using the highest professional standards.
*Creators of a legacy for future generations by honoring, preserving and developing the Permanent Collection through creating a new MMAC facility.
Located on The University of Montana campus in Missoula, MMAC is one of the state's oldest and most prominent cultural reserves. The museum's Permanent Collection, begun in 1894, includes more than 11,000 original works. MMAC, formerly the Museum of Fine Arts, and formerly administered by the School of Fine Arts, became a state museum in 2001 and is now structured as a unit of the Office of the Provost.
