The easiest way to purchase a permit is to log into the Parking Portal to determine any permits that may be immediately available for purchase. Please contact the Parking Office at 406-243-6132 if you are having technical difficulties with the Parking Portal.  You may also visit the Parking Office in person to purchase a permit.

Visitors may pay to park by the hour via the Passport app in any parking area except those specifically designated as reserved parking, quick stop or service and delivery spaces. There are some spaces specifically designated as hourly pay parking in Lots V, F, and S, and there are stationary parking meters in Lots E, F, Lommasson, M, S, U, V, and Missoula College.

All valid UM permits may park in other lots after 5:00 pm Monday – Friday and all day on weekends and holidays when the university is closed.  No permit is required to park on campus after 5:00 pm Monday – Friday and on Saturday, Sunday or days when the university is closed.

Your vehicle was booted based on one or more of the following criteria: 3 or more unpaid parking citations, fines exceeding $100, or citation balance due older than 90 days.

A vehicle can be booted anytime of the day once the registered owner owes $100 or more in accumulated debt across all vehicles registered by that owner regardless of which specific vehicle has debt.

While we do sell more parking permits that we have spaces in line with parking industry best practices, please note that not all UM community members are using the parking lots at the same times. We do see increased parking lot usage between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays – but even on our busiest days we still have parking available in the remote lots. If you need assistance to campus from the remote lots, ASUM Transportation buses regularly run routes around campus and are ADA accessible.

Parking is an auxiliary service at the University of Montana, and therefore, receives no funding from the university. All parking-related expenses must be paid with the revenue generated through permit sales, visitor and event parking fees, and parking citation fees.

Parking revenue is used to help pay the debt on parking lots and the garage, fund the majority of campus safety operations (UMPD) and is also used for Parking’s staffing and operational expenses.

Due to fewer demands on the system during the summer, there are more parking options available. However, the cost of providing parking services does not diminish in the summer in the same way student population fluctuates.

Parking enforcement is a service that is necessary for the University of Montana. As with all university employees, parking enforcement personnel are provided with the equipment necessary to perform the tasks asked of them.

Our enforcement team are required to monitor large sections of campus and are often required to deliver or make use of equipment, and they use vehicles that meet these demands. With the campus size, weather and demands for prompt service, walking or riding bikes simply doesn't always get the job done.

As of the beginning of FY24 there are 4,452 total parking spaces owned and managed by the University of Montana. This number includes all spaces (regular permit, reserved, ADA, quick stop, service and delivery, and visitor/hourly pay) on Mountain Campus, Missoula College, and Dornblaser.
