Gennie DeWeese was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1921. She received her BFA from the Ohio State University in 1942 and went on to receive a Secondary Teaching Certificate from the University of Michigan in 1943.  She and her husband, Robert DeWeese, moved to Bozeman in 1939 when he was hired to teach art at Montana State College (now Montana State University or MSU).  In 1961, DeWeese completed graduate work at MSU and went on to teach at the Montana Institute of the Arts.  She was featured as a guest artist at Montana Art Education Association and the MSU.  DeWeese has won numerous awards and been featured in workshops and publications. In 1983, she served as juror for the Women's Show, at the Black Orchid Gallery in Butte, Montana and was featured in the October 31 issue of Newsweek in article on Montana artists.  In 1985, she was featured as part of a Wall Street Journal article on the Western Arts Foundation.  In 1986, she was the curator for Women's Work the Centennial Exhibition.  In 1994, she was honored as ‘Printmaker of the Year' by the Billings Print Club.  In 1995, DeWeese received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts and a Governor's Award for the Arts.  Immensely influential, her work is typified by large canvas scrolls worked with cattle markers, and later oil sticks that are filled with pattern and abstracted domestic scenes.  DeWeese passed away in 2007 at the age of 86.
