What Can I Do With a Philosophy Degree?

You can do just about anything with a philosophy degree!  Why?  Because classes in philosophy teach you how to think clearly about complex and difficult problems, and how to think about solving them.  And if you can think well, you can do just about anything.

Requirements for Majors

Major Requirements

37 credits | Cumulative GPA = 2.0 | at least 19 credits must be 300-level or higher

  • Lower-Division Core: 12 credits (PHL 210, 233, 261, 262); PHL 210 satisfies intermediate writing requirement
  • Upper-Division Core: 9 credits (300-level or higher), three content areas:  History, Value, Metaphysics & Epistemology
  • Upper-Division Seminar Requirement: 9 credits required in 400-level coursework
  • Electives: 15 credits; at least 9 credits must be 300-level or higher (6 of these 9 credits must be in courses other than 398 or 498)
  • Advanced Writing Course: 1 credit (PHL 400); satisfies advanced writing requirement; co-requisite:  any 400-level Philosophy course (except PHL 498)
  • 2nd semester competence in a second language is no longer required for the major

  • Lower-Division Core: 12 credits (PHL 210, 233, 261, 262); PHL 210 satisfies the intermediate writing requirement
  • Upper-Division Core: 12 credits (400-level), four content areas:  History, Value Theory, Continental Philosophy, Analytic Philosophy
  • Upper-Division Electives: 6 credits (300- or 400- level)
  • Senior Seminar (PHL 499): 3 credits
  • 2nd semester competence in a second language

Requirements for Minors

18 credits 

  • Lower-Division Core: 6 credits (PHL 210 and one of the following courses: PHL 233, 261, 262)
  • Electives: 12 credits; at least 6 credits must be 300-level or higher

  • Lower-Division Core: 12 credits (PHL 210, 233, 261, 262)
  • Upper-Division Core: 6 credits (400-level), two of four content areas:  History, Value Theory, Continental Philosophy, Analytic Philosophy
