NOXIOUS WEEDS IN MONTANA

Although fire may appear to be the most destructive force on Montana’s landscapes, noxious weeds are considerably more destructive. Unlike grasslands and forests that burn during fires, lands impacted by noxious weeds do not return to their previous condition. The noxious weeds choke-out beneficial native plants leading to diminished soil quality, a drop in range land productivity, and soil erosion which can contribute to flooding. One of the top offenders in Montana is spotted knapweed. Under Montana state law, property owners have a legal obligation to control spotted knapweed. This destructive weed emits poisonous toxins which can kill surrounding vegetation.
