DCLCP PROJECT GO KOREAN PROGRAM

The University of Montana offers:

  • Project GO Spring Program (15 weeks): Our spring program focuses on providing a gateway to the summer program for students who don’t currently have any language background.
  • Project GO Summer Program (10 weeks): Our summer program consists of a domestic and a study abroad portion, placing a high emphasis on fluency in the language and cultural understanding.

Fifteen-week Spring Semester Program (Online)

This 15-week language course will be delivered through a synchronous ZoomGov class which students can connect from any location with an internet connection. The learning objective of the course is to help students gain mastery of the fundamentals of Korean including the Hangul (Korean Alphabet System), speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to (1) take Elementary II Korean or an equivalent program; (2) speak Korean on a variety of topics with a basic level grammar and vocabulary; and (3) read and write a short paragraph on familiar topics in Korean. This course does not require any previous education or background knowledge in Korean language. 

Students applying to this course must complete their application packet separately from the summer program.

  • Period: January 18 to May 10, 2024
  • Course Level: Elementary I (Beginner)
  • Class Hours: 45 hours (1.5 hours/day, 2 days/week)
  • Focus: Basic linguistic competence and communicative skills of Korean language
  • Academic Credits: 2 credits from the University of Montana

Ten-week Summer Program (Domestic/Abroad Combined)

This course is a 10-week program, including a 2-week domestic and an 8-week abroad portion.

Details of each portion:

Domestic Portion (1-week)

The 2-week domestic portion offers a 25-hours intensive language & culture training and a pre-departure orientation at the DCLCP Language Learning Center in beautiful Missoula, Montana. This session is designed to simulate real life situations and offer students the opportunity to apply their Korean language skills while also experiencing Korean culture.

  • Period: May 27 to June 1, 2024
  • Course Level: Elementary II, Intermediate I, Intermediate II
  • Class Hours: 25 hours (5 hours/day)
  • Focus: Conversational language, culture and regional studies, pre-departure orientation
  • Academic Credits: 2 credits from the University of Montana

Abroad Portion (9-week)

The 9-week abroad portion offers practical language training focusing on developing communicative skills and cross-cultural competence. It also provides diverse field trips, cultural activities and interaction with language partners/Korean ROTC students at the Korean Language Institute (KLI), Yonsei University in South Korea. As a member of the "SKY" universities, Yonsei University is considered one of the most prestigious universities in Korea. Through the course students can enhance communicative skills in listening, reading, speaking, and writing that can be directly applied to their practical usage of Korean. The course places emphasis on effective and meaningful communication and employing Korean in real-world contexts.

  • Period: June 2 to August 2, 2024
  • Course Level: Elementary II, Intermediate I, Intermediate II
  • Class Hours: 225 hours (5 hours/day, 5 days/week)
  • Focus: Conversational language, culture, and regional studies
  • Academic Credits: 9 credits from Yonsei University*
  • Cultural classes and fieldtrips include Taekwondo, Calligraphy, traditional food making, War Museum of Korea, Korean Folk Village, DMZ/JSA, etc.**

*Students will need to contact their respective university offices in advance for verification on whether credits can be transferred from the abroad university. **The cultural programs are subject to change.
