  • Resort and Hotel Management
  • Casino Management
  • Catering Management
  • Sommelier or Wine Steward
  • Purchasing Management

  • Community Nutrition

Will I be a chef upon graduation?

Short answer: No. In most instances, you need to earn the title of "Chef." Being a chef indicates years of learning and expertise. In some circumstances, it also means a certain certification level. When you graduate, you will be eligible to become a Certified Culinarian and can then move up in levels to earn higher credentials.

Will my class schedule allow me to work outside of class?

We try to create class schedules to allow for work and family life. Most classes are Monday-Thursdays and can be in the morning or afternoon. There may be some classes that will be scheduled earlier in the day, and you may have special events that will need your attendance in the afternoon and evening. We try to leave Fridays and weekends open.

Although we highly value industry experience, we ask that you consider not having a job in food service during your time in school. You will be spending 6 to 8 hours in a kitchen each day with us, and having a full-time or part-time job in a kitchen on top of school may cause burnout.

Can I take classes at the University of Montana?

As a Missoula College student, you are able to take up to 6 credits each semester on the Mountain Campus at the University of Montana.

Are there scholarships available for culinary arts students?

Yes, we currently have two scholarship that are only open to culinary arts students. In addition to these scholarships, students can also apply for general Missoula College scholarships for additional awards.

What type of knives should I purchase?

As part of the program fee, we will provide you with a knife kit that includes all your essential, high quality, commercial grade knives you will need.  These knives, if treated properly, will last you a lifetime. If you want to purchase knives in addition to your knife kit, it is suggested you research commercial knives. It is important to buy knives that will work for you and not just because they look pretty or they're trendy.

What type of shoes should I purchase?

Just like knives, it is important to purchase shoes that work for you.  But it's also important to purchase shoes that will keep you safe and comfortable.

  • Shoes must be black and preferably made of leather
  • Clogs are preferable to lace-ups
  • Shoes must be non-slip

Can I use my current job as the internship requirement?

Answer: it depends. Internships should be an opportunity to gain experience in a position you wish to explore after graduation and as a career choice. Chef Elliott will need to approve all internships prior to starting.
