2021 Summer Conducting Workshop - July 11-15
Discover, Create, Energize, Connect, Express

The University of Montana Summer Conducting Workshop is designed for conductors, music educators, and music education majors no matter what type of ensemble you direct. Daily activities include conducting a live ensemble of workshop participants and members of the UM Symphonic Winds, discussions/lectures, aesthetic movement sessions, chats over dinner, and more. River tubing, backyard grilling, and hiking are workshop traditions. License renewal hours (33) or affordable college credits (2) are offered for educators.
Registration for Conducting Workshop participants will be limited to 25. Applications will be accepted until the workshop is filled. Lectures, discussions, and conducting sessions will be held in-person in an auditorium or outdoors. UM School of Music COVID protocol will be followed requiring masks (performance and standard), spacing, breaks, and sanitizing. Vaccination verification is also being considered for all people involved in the workshop. We will reassess protocol as time progresses.
Update: In order to provide the highest quality and safest experience for everyone, we will require proof of full COVID-19 vaccination for workshop participants, clinicians, and outside musicians needed to fill out the ensemble. This is necessary due to the wide geographic area of the participants. IMPORTANT: If this is not possible, please contact Dr. Smart (james.smart@umontana.edu) immediately so we can fully refund your registration fee.
