Personal Summary

My research interests are diverse and span health psychology, severe mental illness, creativity, treatment of childhood trauma, and health care service delivery, particularly rural and rural minority mental health.

My primary focus is on the determinants and processes of psychological health, and what they tells us about intervention and program development. This work includes delineating the attributes and outcomes that define positive health and examining the mechanisms and processes that produce good outcomes.

Small models, constructed from psychological variables and including nonlinear relationships or coupling among the variables, define Somewhat-Complicated Systems (SCS). These model systems are very useful in understanding behavior, particularly the maintenance of well-being in the face of change and fluctuation.

I am currently using nonlinear dynamic models to study the phenomena of Positive Psychology, as well as temporal variations in emotion, stress and social-support, self-reported personality characteristics, and (with a student) PTSD symptoms. A key issue involves testing the correspondence of nonlinear dynamical models to “real” psychological data; I am interested in both model construction and the study of complex time series data. I am currently involved (with R. Field) in constructing and assesing the behviors of nonlinear models of stress and social support. Current work in my lab is focusing on short-term dynamics of emotions, empathic responding, and other phenomenon; this includes observation, measurement, data analysis, modeling, and model-fitting.

Additional research interests include: Mental health service delivery and health care reform; implementation of Integrated Behavioral Health Care and other innovations in care; assessment tools for psychological health, creativity, and cognitive style; analysis of sequential behavioral and time series data; symptoms and trajectory in severe mental disorders and chronic illness; trauma and children; interpersonal assessment; Evidence-based trauma treatment; negative symptoms in schizophrenia; automated assessment, emphasizing format equivalence and validity of reports; play; evaluation of preventive behavioral health programs.
