Limited Submissions

About Limited Submissions

When a program announcement limits the number of proposals that an institution may submit, the University must take steps to ensure that we do not exceed that limit. As new limited funding opportunities are released, they are distributed to campus via the VPR-COMMUNICATION-L listserv. If you are interested in submitting a proposal to one of these opportunities, follow the instructions for how to submit an internal statement of intent.

Internal statements of intent are evaluated by the Vice President for Research (VPR). Others may be included at the VPR's discretion, including chairs or deans, particularly if there are multiple submissions from a single department. All individuals submitting internal statements of intent will be notified via email whether or not their project was selected to advance to the proposal stage.

How to Submit

If interested in submitting a proposal to a limited submission opportunity, you must submit an internal statement of intent. To submit, send your internal statement of intent by the end of the day on the internal deadline date to Katherine.Swan@umontana.edu. Please combine the statement of intent into a single pdf file.

Eligible UM PIs interested in participating in a proposal under a limited submission opportunity must submit the following as part of their internal statement of intent.

  1. Opportunity Title: Clearly indicate the opportunity title on the first page of your statement of intent.
  2. Project Description: Include a brief description of your project (1-2 pages). This should include an overview of what you propose to do, the project’s potential impact, and a list of senior personnel and their institutional affiliations. We do not need full biographical sketches at this stage.
  3. Preliminary Project Budget: Include an estimated budget and short budget narrative.  Please include budget estimates for anticipated expenses including, but not limited to, personnel, travel, supplies, subawards, and indirect cost recovery. We do not need a fully detailed budget at this stage.

Internal statements of intent will be evaluated by the Vice President for Research (VPR). Others may be included at the VPR's discretion, including chairs or deans, particularly if there are multiple submissions from a single department.  All individuals submitting internal statements of intent will be notified whether or not their project was selected to advance to the proposal stage.

If at any point you become aware of a limited submission opportunity for which you would like to apply, please contact the research development manager, Katherine Swan, directly at katherine.swan@mso.umt.edu.
