Research

The Wilderness Institute conducts and supports research and creative scholarship related to Wilderness and wildlands. We take a broad and interdisciplinary perspective on wilderness research. Focal areas include:

  • Wilderness and wildlands stewardship, management and recreation
  • Ecological and conservation science conducted in or enabled by wilderness areas
  • Environmental humanities and arts with a wilderness or wildlands focus

The Wilderness Institute supports students and independent scholars with grants made from the Matthew Hansen Endowment for Wilderness Studies.

Support for graduate student research is provided by the Wilderness Institute Meier Graduate Fellowship, an endowed fellowship.
