The Wilderness Institute champions wildlands in collaboration with agency and community partners. Service learning and community engagement complement the core of our monitoring mission. We provide educational and career-building field opportunities for citizens to join WI staff in monitoring wilderness character, ground-truthing wilderness conditions and performing stewardship activities in local wildlands.

We connect federal employees, scientists, educators, and the public with their wilderness heritage through our Wilderness Connect website. Through a collaborative partnership with the Arthur Carhart National Wilderness Training Center and the Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute, Wilderness Connect educates hundreds of thousands of visitors annually about the benefits of wilderness and wilderness stewardship.
