Programs - Art Education

Fine Arts Building | Room 102 | 406.243.4208 | { Support the School of Art }

Students in the Art Education program are trained as artists in studio classes with the requisite art history and criticism course work. They must complete the competencies and perspectives in general education and apply and be accepted into the College of Education and Human Sciences in order to finish their training. In year-long methodology courses, students take theory into practice. Students are welcome to study inter-disciplinary studio practices.

Montana Teaching Certification in Art K-12 requires a BA in Art with a specialization in Art Education. Students may also obtain certification with a BFA, but the course work extends beyond the 120-credit limit or an MA in Curriculum and Instruction with the required undergraduate credits for teacher certification in art. The methodology courses Art 407 and 408 provide a year-long experience in which the students take theory into practice. The students engage in practical and authentic field experiences that provide opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in visual art curriculum development and assessment from preschool to high school. Following is a list of Schools and Institutions that the students may work with.
