Diversity
Advisory Council
Current
Council Members
"
. . . the University welcomes, encourages, and celebrates the diversity of its students,
faculty, and staff. The resultant community derives its distinctive character and strength
from the blending array of cultures, beliefs, attitudes, learning styles, capacities,
perspectives, and voices of its constituent elements. Each individual and group within the
community is in some way differently-abled and contributes to the education of others,
whether as role models and exemplars or through unique insights and perspectives. Only by
cherishing and building upon these individual and group strengths can the University attain
real community."
George
M. Dennison
President
In
1990, the Board of Regents of the Montana University System adopted
a Minority
Achievement Policy. The
policy required each campus to develop an action plan to accomplish
the goals for diversity. In the case of The University of Montana,
a year was spent developing a ten-year action plan with input from
a broad cross-section of campus constituents. In 1991, President
Dennison appointed a Diversity Advisory Council of students, staff,
faculty and administrators and established an annual operations budget
to help the council answer his charge of monitoring achievement of the
goals outlined in the action plan. Since the completion of the 10-Year
Action Plan in 2001, the Diversity Advisory Council continues to function
under the following charge:
To encourage, advocate, and facilitate communication, education,
and relations among persons of various races, physical conditions,
religions, national origins, citizenships, genders, ages, socio-economic
backgrounds, and sexual orientations at The University of Montana.
