Zach Rossmiller is the Associate Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at the University of Montana (UM). Zach provides vision and strategic leadership for UM’s computing and information technology enterprise and drives innovative solutions to support academics and research. These efforts have earned Zach several prestigious awards, including UM’s Sustainability Award for improving energy savings and operational efficiencies, and recognition from the academic community for implementing innovative measures that provide students greater access to campus IT resources.

Zach has received several National Science Foundation grant awards aimed at improving UM’s research cyber-infrastructure. This resulted in UM’s first high-performance compute cluster and high-speed Science-DMZ. With experience in planning, implementing and supporting existing and next-generation enterprise solutions, Zach is dedicated to providing forward-thinking ideas that unify, empower, and establish IT leadership in higher education.

Prior to the CIO role in 2020, Zach served as UM’s Executive Director of Cyber-Infrastructure and was responsible for campus wide systems administration, research computing, data centers, network infrastructure, telecommunications, and classroom technology. 

Zach is an active member of the NorthWest Academic Computing Consortium, the Northern Tier Network Consortium, Pacific NorthWest GigaPop, Rocky Mountain Advanced Computing Consortium, and serves on the board of directors for the Health Information Exchange of Montana. In addition, Zach has served on the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Montana board of directors.

Zach received an MBA, a B.S. in Management Information Systems, and an AAS in Computer Networking from the University of Montana. Along with earning degrees, Zach has taught UM courses on operating systems, enterprise security, desktop security, and business systems analysis design.
