NARL in Costa Rica
As part of ongoing research projects focused on characterizing the activity and biochemistry of hyperthermoacidophilic archaea, samples are taken from several volcanic sites in the Central American country of Costa Rica. In addition, to environmental sampling, Ceballos collaborates with the Organization for Tropical Studies and the Native American/Pacific Islander Research Experiences (NAPIRE) program to provide “hands-on” field training to indigenous students from across the U.S. and its territories. In 2008, a group of 15 indigenous students participated in a field exercise that demonstrated how hyperthermoacidophiles are sampled from geothermal “hot” springs. (Sampling permits on file from MINAE, Costa Rica). For more information on international student opportunities, please contact Michael Ceballos at (406) 243-5804 or email rmichael.ceballos@umontana.edu.
