Academic Unit Data
The
The faculty data, unless noted otherwise, are for the instructional faculty fun= ded by or generating SCH for an academic unit, as of the Fall semester.
Instructional faculty for an academic unit can include any or all of the following:
Contract faculty, including:
Tenure faculty – tenured and tenure track faculty
Adjun= ct faculty – nontenurable faculty
Supplemental facu= lty – contract administrators, staff or other nonfaculty, etc. who also t= each on an
occasional basis
Graduate teaching assistants (GTAs)
Contract faculty (tenure and adjunct faculty) are assigned to the units from which t= hey are funded. GTAs funded by an academic unit are also assigned to that unit.
Supplemental faculty, however, are generally funded in a primary position outside the academic unit, usually in a nonacademic unit, and generally receive supplemental pay from the academic unit for which they are teaching. Some GTAs also are funded from out= side the unit. For these individua= ls, their FTE is assigned based on the course subject – it is assigned to= the academic unit to which the course is assigned.
The instructional FTE for contract faculty reflects the portion of their funding that comes from the State-funded instructional budget for their academic unit. Some faculty have= split appointments and funding between two academic units, which is reflected in = the data for the respective units. The total FTE indicated for contract faculty in the faculty credit load listing= s is the total funded FTE for that person regardless of funding source.
For supplemental faculty, the applicable instructional FTE is derived assuming a full-time equivalency (FTE) of twelve credits per semester, following the methodology= of the National Study of Instructional Costs and Productivity (NSICP), discuss= ed later. For example, a three-c= redit course would generate a 0.25 instructional FTE for the instructor. For the GTAs, the FTEs= are as indicated in their respective contracts.
The Academic Unit Data (AUD) generally include two instruction= al faculty FTE measures, for: &nbs= p;
Tenure faculty, including only the tenured or tenure-track faculty (excludes nontenurable faculty, supplemental faculty, and GTAs); and for

This indicates the percentage =
of all
instructional faculty in (or credited to) that unit who are tenure faculty
(tenured / tenure track). The=
residual,
then, reflects the degree to which the unit relies on other than tenure fac=
ulty
to carry the instructional load for the unit.
Student credit hours (SCH) for each course are
derived by multiplying:
(a) the credit value of the cl=
ass
(assigned number of credits) by
(b) the number of students enr=
olled
in that class.
The total SCH count for the academic unit, in turn, is t=
he
sum of the student credit hours (SCH) generated for all the courses/classes
credited to that unit for the Fall semester. The SCH count includes the S=
CH for
any one-to-one (individualized instruction) classes and other classes that =
do
not qualify as Organized Class Sections (see below).
SCH are assigned or credited to a unit based on the
assignment of the instructor of record, as discussed above (Faculty, Faculty
FTE). In most cases, th=
e SCH
follow the instructor; and since most instructors are contract faculty, the=
SCH
assignment then is based primarily on the funding source (unit) of the
instructor.
It should be noted, though, that if a contract faculty
member is funded by one academic unit (A), but is teaching a class offered =
in
another (B), the SCH for that class will be credited to the instructor̵=
7;s
funding unit (A) – the SCH follow the instructor.
In those cases where a contract faculty member has a spl=
it
funding appointment between units, the FTE, SCH and other relevant data wil=
l be
allocated accordingly.
Any SCH generated by supplemental faculty or GTAs funded
from outside the unit are assigned to the units by subject of the courses
taught, as is the case with the assignment of faculty FTE.
SCH counts may also be similarly derived for specific subsets of faculty or courses. Undergraduate = SCH are for courses numbered 499 and below; graduate SCH are counts for courses numbered 500 and above. Tenur= e faculty SCH are for courses taught by tenure faculty only. Unless noted otherwise, however, t= he SCH listed in the AUD are for all faculty assigned or “credited” to= the unit.

Student FTE
The student FTE is derived from the SCH count and assume=
s a
full-time equivalency to be fifteen semester hours for an undergraduate and
twelve semester hours for a graduate student. The overall (total) student FTE is=
the
sum of the undergraduate and graduate FTEs.
Student FTEs can be simil= arly derived for specific subsets of faculty or courses, such as for tenure facu= lty only rather than for all faculty. Unless noted otherwise, however, the student FTEs provided in the AUD are for all SCH generated by all faculty.

Student Headcount (Majors)
This is a count of all students who have a declared major in the program area(s)= of that department, as reported by the UM Registrar in the third week census f= or the Fall semester.
The counts include both the primary (first) major and any second major listed by the students. Where applicabl= e, the data also include any declared pre-majors who have yet to be officially admitted into the respective degree programs.
The AUD detail distinguishes between the actual majors (undergraduate and gradu= ate) and any pre-majors, but the totals for the unit include both the majors and= any pre-majors.

Student-Faculty Ratios (SFR)
These measures reflect the number of student FTEs per one faculty FTE, with separ= ate ratios provided for tenure faculty only and for all faculty, including the GTAs, for the Fall semester. =
The SFRs by student level (undergraduate, graduate) are based on total faculty = FTEs in each case (for tenure faculty and for all faculty) because of the diffic= ulty allocating faculty FTEs to each level.&nbs= p;

ACS reflects the a= verage student enrollment, for the Fall semester, for courses having organized<= /u> class sections -- courses provided principally by me= ans of regularly scheduled classes, meeting in classrooms or similar facilities at stated times.
T= he count of organized class sections (OCS) excludes:
N= oncredit courses;
Z= ero credit course sections (lab, discussion, recitation sections) in conjunction with the credit-bearing
l= ecture portion of a course; and
Courses in which the instruction is not condu= cted in regularly scheduled class meetings, such as
“readingR= 21; or “special topics” courses, “problems” or “research” courses (including dissertation/thesis research), and “individual instruction” courses (typically in music and fine arts).
For example, if a class has one main scheduled lecture and several separate discussion sections, only the enrollment for t= he main lecture class is included in the count for determining average class s= ize.
