you will find the Academic Unit Data Report for 2006-07. As you know, thi=
s is
the fourth year we |

provided this report to compare instructional productivity and cost for t=
he
thirty-nine University of
| |
| Montana
academic departments and schools/colleges to their respective national
norms. The norms, by<=
span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> |
|
| discipline,
are from the National Study of Instructional Cost and Productivity (NSICP)
conducted by the |
|
| University
of Delaware, often referred to as “the Delaware Study” and
generally recognized as the “gold |
|
| standard”
for cost and productivity analysis in higher education. Although NSICP does not provide
national |
|
| norms
for two-year programs, we have included departmental summaries for the
College of Technology for the |
|
| last
three years. As usual, in
addition to the parameters for which national benchmarks are available, we
have |
| included
a number of other measures in order to provide trend data that will be us=
eful
for assessment. And –=
as |
| in
years past – Fall Faculty Load Data is also included to provide the
detail of individual teaching loads for the |
|
| current
semester. |
|
|
| You
will recall that the Delaware Study protocol is quite specific in terms of
how instructional FTEs, student |
|
| credit
hours, organized course sections, etc. will be counted and assigned to
departments, primarily based on the |
| funding
source of the faculty providing the instruction. While other methodologies could =
be
used, we all agreed |
| to
utilize this approach, because: |
|
| ·&n=

It ensures that we have valid and consistent external benchmarks, and |
|
| ·
It ties productivity to resources utilized. |
|
| Appendices
are included that provide descriptions and sources of key data, as well as
definitions used in |
|
| preparing
the Faculty Load Data. |
|
|
| In
preparing this report, we have discussed specific faculty funding/appoint=
ment
issues with several Deans in the |
| effort
to provide a fair and reasonable analysis, and progress has been made by
several schools/colleges to better |
| align
their instructional resources with their curricula. Nevertheless, there are still so=
me
situations where |
|
| realignment
may be feasible. In the cas=
es
where departmental detail can not be accurately generated, the data |
| are
presented at the school/college level only. |
|
|
| Finally,
a word regarding the relationship between this report and the Academic
Operating Plan efforts in which |
| you
are currently engaged. The
baseline data compiled and provided as you requested for the development
of |
|
| operating
plans include some information that is topically-related and may appear t=
o be
the same as that |
|
| included
in the Academic Unit Data Report. Please remain mindful that information
contained in the Academic |
|
| Unit
Data Report may have its own, sometimes different, definition as required=
by
the Delaware Study. It is
