Peer Mentoring

TRIO SSS Mentors provide academic, personal, and logistical guidance and support to other TRIO SSS students, primarily freshmen and sophomores who are relatively new to UM. Mentors will convey and uphold standards, norms, and values of a successful college student. Mentors should also challenge the student to stretch incrementally and progressively beyond their perceived limitations. The mentor is not an expert, but a student peer who has gained valuable lessons from life and school experience. Rather than providing students with specific answers, the mentor will ask questions that guide students to their ideal solutions, keeping in mind that each student’s ideal solution will be unique. Together, the mentor and mentee will create short and long-term goals that are challenging and motivating, while also being realistic and obtainable.
